January 2009 Entries
I could not help but notice in recent years that national and state politics have been ruled by the cities.  The fact is that in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh determine statewide elections.  There is influence in the cities of our nation.  So, where is the gospel’s presence in the cities?  There has been a movement out of the urban centers of the sound, evangelical, bible church for the past 30 years.  Church growth gurus told us that we needed land, parking, and “safe” surroundings to grow our churches.  The net result is that we turned the population in the cities over to the liberal or ethnic church with untrained pastors and social gospel proponents.  Shame on us!  We cannot and should not criticize those living in the cities for voting for a particular philosophy or policies when we have left them and stopped having an influence on their thinking. Problems like abortions, welfare, pornography, crime, and drugs are intense in the city. The answer is the gospel, not more police.  No more government programs.  No more social work.  We need churches where God’s people grow in the truth of God’s Word and learn how to live out the gospel. Again, this is just another indicator of how important it is to influence the cities.  The fact is that all foreseeable elections can only be won by going through the cities. This past election has awakened the city to the reality that they outnumber everyone else. Look at all of the large churches that surround Lancaster County and the small amount of money that they give back to the city for ministry.  Something has got to change, and I say it is the church aggressively attempting to reach the cities. If you look at Paul’s missionary strategy, he first went into the cities.  He set up a spiritual beachhead and then moved outward.  The cities offered the Apostle a greater number of people, a cross section of familia and ethnic groups, transient commerce that could take the gospel with them when they were finished with their business, and it was easy to build on the present “religious” community already operating in the cities.  I believe evangelicals need to do the same.  The fact is that most of the “young evangelicals” have found their way into the cities.  The art community is resident in cities.  Food establishments are in the cities.  Businesses and entertainment make the city their home. The only main institution that continues to flee the city is churches.  What say you?
This past Sunday I shared my 2009 Vision message. During the message I shared some thoughts that our leadership is grappling with concerning issues that we perceive as “failures” within the evangelical community and where we have “lost” ground in regards to the gospel’s effectiveness in the world. Over the next few weeks I want to facilitate a “conversation” concerning the legitimacy of these ideas and some practical ways we could help our church engage in these possible initiatives and some creative ways to do that. Here are the eleven issues….starting thinking…praying….considering….in a few days I will roll out my thoughts on the first one.
1)     The abandonment of the cities
2)     The ignoring of eschatology
3)     The contextualization of the gospel
4)     The avoidance of community service as being a “social gospel”
5)     The absence in the public school
6)     The holding back of creative expression of faith in the arts
7)     The failure to engage in local politics
8)     The uneducated in dealing with non-moral issues (economy, ecology, etc)
9)     The regrets of personal financial mismanagement
10)The allowing of uncheck post-modern thinking
11)The overused emotional driven debate style

I have taken a break for a week for a number of reasons.  I have been swapped with work....Vision Sunday message, loss of a staff person, trip to HYC to speak to a church about church planting and weariness from all the Obama stuff.  I was having a bad attitude in recent days and then I read James MacDonald's blog....it really helps me and i hope it helps you!

Thankful for our New President? Yes!

posted by James MacDonald on January 20th, 2009.

1 Timothy 2:1-2  I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

What a great Scripture to put into practice today, especially since I just finished watching the swearing in and the inaugural speech of the 44th President of the United States of America, Barak Obama.  Like most Bible-believing Christians I can think of many biblical convictions that I wish our new leader had, and about which we must fervently pray.  But today I think I will focus on obedience to the above Scripture and cultivate the kind of thankfulness that leads to a quiet, peaceable life.

1) I am thankful for a president whose election says to the minorities of our land that a majority of Americans have chosen their leader without regard to his racial background, that can only be healthy and good.  I am thankful for the immense joy in the heart of every one of my black brothers and sisters, people I know and love who are filled with incredible hope and dignity today.

2) I am thankful for Obama’s determination to hold Washington accountable for self-interest and personal greed.  As an outsider, he has an incredible opportunity to help those who have lived by ‘business as usual’ to take a fresh look at themselves and the partisan politics that has so often lost sight of what is in the best interest of America.

3) I am thankful for his decision to have Pastor Rick Warren pray.  Warren’s prayer was unapologetically Christ-centered yet appropriately sensitive to those who would differ.  Obama’s decision to have him pray was an unusual expression of non-partisan intent, that he would not reverse though it brought him much criticism.  It was a conscious choice by Obama to invite evangelicals beyond single issue politics and toward involvement in the many issues all thoughtful Americans agree about.

4) I am thankful for the realism of his speech.  He did not hype the people with “yes we can” rhetoric.  He did not avoid the problems facing our nation with emotionalism and false hope.  He did not promise a prosperity that could be accomplished without sacrifice and hard work and he specifically insisted that those personal benefit should not be expected by anyone who was not willing to work and give and believe and hope.  I love that.  Down with entitlement and partisan politics and up with patriotism and personal sacrifice.

5) I am thankful for the engagement of so many young people in the governance of our country.  For too long young people have been only skeptical and aloof in regards to Washington.  In Barak Obama there is an opportunity for a new generation to believe in our democratic process and reengage their energy and intellect toward the solutions we desperately need.

In closing I am thankful for the example set by President Bush in the peaceful transfer of power and the respect he showed in spite of glaring differences in policy and conviction.  Bush has led our country according to his principles through the toughest time, by far, that any of us or our parents have lived through.  I thank God for sustaining him and hope that every true believer in Jesus Christ will not be diminished in their prayer for our new president simply because he does not agree with some of our biblical convictions.  Barak Obama needs our prayer for strength to maintain the convictions he holds which are in keeping with God’s will for our nation, wisdom to realize where his beliefs are not according to God’s plan and then the courage to change.

Romans 13:1, Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

That’s good to know, isn’t it?  Our new president has less experience and more pressure than any president in history, might he remember where his power ultimately comes from and seek the Lord for daily strength; he’s gonna need it.

Recent days I have been amazed by the "anti" Israel speaks in the media. But worst and even more astonishing is  the apathy and lack of understanding of Christians on the importance of supporting and praying for Israel's victry in the Middle East.  Many Christians today understand that Israel is significant in the scriptures and that Israel HAd played a part in God's story.  The fact is Israel is still and forever be a significant aspect of Biblical history and that in the future Israel will again be the center stage of redemptive story.  In addition it is also clear from the Bible that "those who bless Israel, will be blessed." Therefore as a nation we have always taken a VERY pro-Israel stance in all that we in the world. If we are in negotiations between Arab and Israeli leaders, we better be leaning towards the Israeli side of things.  To do so would only be to our peril. A matter of fact, one Biblical scholar has charted what was happening in our country concerning economy, violence and domestic turmoil next to how our national leaders were treating God's people.  Each time the US took positions that were in favor of Arab ideals, we suffered.  Each time we stood for and boldly supported Israel, our nation prospered.   I think we better get ourselves schooled up on how important Israel is in God's eyes and better make sure we  are overtly supportive of the Hebrew people -- or we will pay the price!

Today my son passed his driving test.  He is now no longer chained to his parents.  A matter of fact, its pretty awesome to let him drive himself!  But getting to the exam was a "God thing!"  Alex has been practicing with my car (a Sable - medium size vehicle) instead of my wife's Ford Winstar mini van!  Last night, we had just got home froma wedding and were discussing the whole driving test stuff when Alex said - "Dad, you have got to have your registration and proof of insurance ID, do you know where it is?"  As all men, I answered confidently.... "its in the glove compartment!"  Alex did not trust dear old Dad (his mother's influence) and so he went outside with gym shorts and no shoes to the Sable.  When he returned he asked again about the registration, this time adding the phrase - where is the "valid" registration?  And like all real men I answered, "your mom was supposed to take care of that??

See what happened, on December 13th Kris sent in the renew registration and check and we guess with the Christmas mail, it was alte. So on December 31st i began driving illegally.  Alex was not so concerned that i could be pulled over for  illegal registration but now he would have to take the test in Kris' small ship of a car! he began to freak out!  Now as a parent you feel bad for your kids and you want to step in and bail them out.  You don't want them to experience pain. you don't want them to fail. You want the to have it "better then you" and so you try to figure out how to come to their rescue. However, I also know that this is a terrific chance for Alex to rely on God and for God to show himself stronin Alex's behalf.  As Alex went off to bed, i told him -- "look Buddy, God knew all about this situation....obviously this is a chance for you to trust him and rely on him and the fact is if you fail, it is for some purpose -- the quicker you accept that fact the better."

Well we woke up early and headed over to the test area for Alex to practice the all consuming "parallel parking" (can someone please tell me why in the world there is such an emphasis on a driving procedure that you probably use four times in your lifetime?).  The first time he nailed it....he felt good about himself.  The next three times he flubbed it bad...now he was panicking.  But again this was a chance as a parent to allow him to trust God.  It was test time and he wanted to pray before driving up to the examiner. I have never heard the kind of impeccatory petition like that in a long time.  But the fact was Alex was humbly asking for help from his God -- pretty refreshing!  He pulls up and sees a woman examiner (he was told by his friends -- they are the worst!). I left the vehicle and off he went.  He passed.

We pulled around and got his picture taken and boldly displayed his license!  When we got back in the car, we prayed again, this time it was by a young man who had just seen God not only answer his prayer but a god who stepped in and rescued him.  he was grateful and rejoicing in THE LORD!  Great lesson. For Dad it allowed me the opportunity NOT TO TRY TO SAVE HIM....that is what God is there to do, it is my job to remind my son that God is there for him -- just allow him to do His thing!

Its 2009 and its a NEW day...my buddy Ray Pritchard helps us focus our lives this new year with 31 questions that each of us should ask!!!

The first day of a new year is a good time to stop, reflect, refocus and consider where we are going. The question for today is not, “Where are you going?” but rather, “Where will you be when you get there?” This morning all of us are taking the first steps on a 365-day journey. Where will you be when you arrive at December 31? What will you do with the gift of a new beginning that God has given you? In order to help us think about this in a practical way, Don Whitney has put together 31 questions. There are 10 basic questions and then 21 more–one for each day of the month.

If you are married, I urge you to discuss these questions with your spouse. If you are in a small group, take your first session this year to go over these questions. Thinking through these questions together will help make 2009 truly life-changing for you.

    10. What single thing that you plan to do this year will matter most in ten years? In eternity?
